2023 MiPHS Annual Meeting

Guest Speaker Jacob McCormick, Photo Archivist and Educator for the Michigan State Capitol Commission, presented a lecture titled “By the Yard: Michigan in Panoramic Photographs.” It encompassed the history of panoramas, how panoramas are executed, as well as some fun examples from Michigan history.
James Barnor Photo Exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Arts
MiPHS Group Tour, Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2023
The historic DIA photography exhibit by the Ghanian and UK photographer entitled “James Barnor: Accra/London—A Retrospective” ran from May 28 through October 15, 2023. This exhibit was co-curated by MiPHS’ Member/Advisor Nancy Barr, DIA’s head of Prints, Drawings and Photography. Nancy gave the group an insightful tour of the Barnor exhibit followed by the same of DIA’s back room.
Approximately 30,000 art patrons attended the exhibit, which included over 170 photographs covering Barnor’s work between the 1950s and the 1980s. Barnor powerfully captured his images from Accra and London with his large and medium format cameras - types of which were on display from MiPHS Member Chuck Fehl's collection.

"The Camera at Work" - A Talk by Jeff L. Rosenheim

Jeff Rosenheim is the Joyce Frank Menschel Curator in Charge, Department of Photography, Metropolitan Museum of Art. In this presentation, he explored the ways photography viewed working people, from the earliest daguerreotypes through the 20th Century lenses of such photographers as August Sander and Irving Penn.

Jason Schneider is a lifelong photography enthusiast and leading expert on camera history. His area of interest ranges from early antique and classic film cameras to modern digital technologies. His literary education at NYU and its proximity to New York City camera stores provided all the elements needed for his vast work. He has written hundreds of columns on this subject for Modern Photography and Popular Photography - where he was Editor-in-Chief for 16 years. Most recently he appears as Senior Editor of Digital Imaging Reporter magazine. He has also appeared on numerous TV shows due to his wide-ranging wit and wisdom. His entertaining and informative columns were the basis for his three books on camera collecting, which have become the gold standard for general reference and interest in the subject.

MiPHS welcomes Lynda Klitch as our 2018 Annual Meeting guest speaker. Lynda is Postcard Curator for the well known art collector, Leonard Lauder, who has collected and studied postcards since he was young. Lynda will talk about Mr. Lauder's postcard collection, with particular attention to the “real photo” component, which will be featured in an exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 2019.
